Hyderabad: In a shocking incident, an assistant professor at the state-run Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences in Adilabad has been arrested by police over his alleged involvement in an attack on 6 junior doctors.

Apart from the assistant professor, who has been removed from service, four others were also arrested for the alleged incident that happened on December 13, adds PTI.

The police action came after a student complained regarding the incident that occurred on the institute's premises, police said on Friday. The accused including the assistant professor have been booked under sections 337, 447 and 307 of the IPC.

It has been alleged by the complainant that the 'attackers' had tried to knock the students down with their car when the latter tried to stop the vehicle. The car which allegedly hit a gate was also seized, they said.

As per the latest media report by Telangana Today, six junior doctors from the Institute were assaulted, allegedly by five persons including the assistant professor. Adilabad II town Sub-Inspector G Pradeep informed that the junior doctors who were assaulted included T Kavi Raj, Bharath, P Naveen, Abhishek, Naveeen and Vijay. They sustained injuries when the assistant professor accompanied by others attacked them.

The daily adds that police have informed that the accused picked up an argument with the five junior doctors and beat them up. Later, they allegedly dragged one of the junior doctors on the bonnet of the car from 500 metres. After dumping him at the gate, the accused fled the spot.

The motive behind the attack was the professor being irked over a student's rude behaviour with his relative who is a top official at the institute. The students of the institute held protests over the last two days seeking removal of this top official from his post, police sources said. Former MLA Jogu Ramanna extended his solidarity to the doctors.

Meanwhile, a senior health official said the assistant professor, who was employed on contractual basis, was removed from service on Thursday. A committee has been constituted by the institute to investigate the issue and prevent recurrence of such undesirable incidents in other medical colleges. They visited the premises on Friday, the official added.

Telangana Today adds that the protesting students also alleged that the director of the institute knew about the incident. However, the director denied such allegations and stated that he was ready to face action if found guilty. He also informed the Daily that the accused assistant professor was terminated for his role in the brawl.

However, the medicos at the institute continued their protests on Friday and boycotted their duties demanding removal of the director. They have alleged that one of the accused is a distant relative of the director. Therefore, the director must be removed as well, they demanded, adds the Times of India.

The two-member inquiry committee, which was sent by the Director of Medical Education (DME) to investigate the assault on the six junior doctors, have launched its investigation. It comprises Dr. Shiva Prasad and Dr. VV Rao. The members of the committee met students, faculty and eyewitnesses on what led to the incident in the early hours of Thursday.
