Solapur Neurologist Suicide: 27 employees file complaints against Admin officer

Kolhapur: The arrested administrative officer of S P Institute of Neurosciences, currently in police custody for allegedly abetting the suicide of renowned neurologist Dr. Shirish Walsangkar, was found to have significant control over the hospital’s daily operations. Her behaviour raised serious concerns, prompting 27 employees to file complaints against her. 

This information was presented in a remand report submitted by the police before Chief Judge Vijaysinha Bhandari's court in the afternoon. The police requested an additional three days of custody, stating that further investigation could uncover more details and evidence.

According to a latest media report by TOI, the accused had been in police custody for three days, which ended on Wednesday. She was brought before Chief Judge Vijaysinha Bhandari’s court, where the police requested a three-day extension of her remand. However, the court granted only a two-day extension.

According to the police, the remand extension was requested based on ten points. Inspector Ajit Lakade, the investigating officer, informed the court that the accused had authority over the hospital's daily operations, and 27 staff members had filed complaints regarding her behaviour.

"We visited the hospital on Tuesday and interacted with the staff. We expect more to come out as the investigation progresses," Lakade said.

In court, the defence lawyer argued that there was no need to extend the remand, stating that the investigation could continue without keeping the accused in custody. However, the public prosecutor countered this by saying that the investigation also involves a financial angle, which makes her continued custody necessary.

Medical Dialogues had recently reported that a city-based renowned neurologist, Dr Shirish Padmakar Valsangkar, owner of Valsangkar Hospital, also known as the S P Institute of Neurosciences, committed suicide after shooting himself in the head with his licensed revolver at his residence.

Following this, Solapur police arrested the administrative officer of the S P Institute of Neurosciences in connection with the suicide of Dr Shirish Walsangkar. The accused was booked on charges of abetment to suicide after her name surfaced in a note left by Dr Walsangkar.

According to the police, Dr. Walsangkar’s suicide note alleged that the accused, whom he had mentored and appointed, made false and obscene allegations against him, causing him severe mental distress. Investigators also recovered an email dated April 17, 2025, reportedly sent by the accused to Dr. Walsangkar. In it, she expressed distress over circulating rumours and hinted at suicidal thoughts if the situation was not resolved.

Following the email, Dr Walsangkar reportedly called the accused to the hospital, where she apologised for her remarks. However, later that evening, Dr Walsangkar was found dead at his home. The police are now working to verify the contents of the suicide note and email, and plan to collect handwriting samples from the accused.
