Stipend Hike: Maharashtra Senior Resident Doctors to Get Rs 85,000, Effective from Current Batch

Mumbai: Bringing good news to the Senior Resident Doctors working in the government medical colleges across Maharashtra, the State Government has increased the stipend to 85,000 rupees. Previously, the SRs in the State used to get Rs 75,000 as their stipend.

Expressing its appreciation for the Government, the Maharashtra State Association of Resident Doctors issued a Press Release on Saturday and also announced that the increased stipend will be implemented effectively for the current batch of Senior Residents 2023-2024.

In its press release, Central MARD thanked the administration for their prompt response and continuous support for the welfare of resident doctors and further mentioned, "We would especially thank Honourable Minister of Medical Education and Health Shri Hassan Mushrif Sir, hon Secretary MEDD, hon Commissioner IAS Rajeev Nivatkar Sir and Director Dr. Chandanwale sir and CENTRAL MARD 2022-23 committee. We would also thank former Minister Honourable Girish Mahajan sir for his continuous support."

"Central MARD is grateful that the government and administration recognised the much needed increment of the stipend which will result in immediate upliftment of the resident's quality of life and boost their moral," the association further mentioned in the release.

In the release, the association added that it hopes to continue to work in tandem with DMER, MEDD, and the Government to ensure well being of the resident Doctors of the State of Maharashtra.

Commenting on the matter, the President of Central MARD, Dr. Abhijit Rajesh Helge told Medical Dialogues, "We are happy that they have increased the stipend for senior residents. But it is much higher in central govt colleges where they get Rs 1 lakh and in Delhi medical schools the stipend is Rs 1.2 lakh for both junior and senior residents."

When asked if they want further increase of stipend, he added "We want a uniform stipend all throughout the nation."

Recently, the association had written to the Governor of the State regarding various problems and difficulties faced by the Resident doctors in the State.

In the letter dated August 25, 2023, the association referred to substandard living arrangements for the resident doctors, severe shortage of faculty count in various departments of multiple institutes, rising number of attacks on doctors by relatives of patients, etc.

Apart from these, the association had also requested the Government to ensure fast-tracking of payment of pending arrears. "Central MARD requests the government to ensure Fast tracking of payment of Pending arrears of current and former Resident doctors. Despite relentless follow ups the issue of Pending arrears still persist, we request the release of the grants at the earliest," the association mentioned in its letter directed to the Governor.
