Violence at Mayaganj Hospital: Mob attacks On-Duty doctor, hospital staff; throws fire extinguisher

Bhagalpur: Violence erupted at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (JLNMCH), also known as Mayaganj Hospital where an on-duty doctor suffered serious head injuries after a fire extinguisher cylinder was thrown at him by relatives after an injured patient was declared dead upon arrival. Eight more people sustained injuries during the altercation.  

The injured individuals in the violent altercation included two doctors, hospital staff and police personnel who reached the spot to control the situation. The incident began at 10:18 PM on Friday when the patient, a resident of Makandpur, succumbed to his injuries following a road accident. As soon as doctors informed the family of his death, they allegedly attacked the medical staff.

According to a Hindustan news report, the family threw a fire extinguisher cylinder at one of the on-duty doctors, which hit his head causing serious injuries. Apart from him, another doctor was also injured in the altercation.

Hospital guards and police officers who were trying to manage the situation were also attacked and sustained injuries. Two inspectors who came to calm the matter were also beaten up.

The deceased's son-in-law told the Daily, that he had gone to Sangrampur with his father-in-law to see a girl for his brother-in-law. After seeing the girl, he was returning with his father-in-law on the bike however, both met with an accident between Shahkund and Akbarnagar. They were brought to a hospital in Shahkund but later referred to Mayaganj Hospital.

The doctors at Mayaganj Hospital declared him brought dead considering his situation. This led to a ruckus at the campus and escalated to a violent altercation with doctors and hospital staff getting injured.

The angry family members accused the ambulance staff of negligence, claiming that while oxygen was administered to the man, the supply was not turned on. Moreover, they also vandalised the hospital property and the medical equipment in a rage.

To control the situation, Hospital Superintendent Dr. K.K. Sinha, along with SDM Sadar Dhananjay Kumar and DSP City-1 Ajay Chaudhary, rushed to the scene. The hospital management confirmed that an official complaint would be filed, and authorities plan to use CCTV footage to identify the attackers. 

Meanwhile, as per the Daily, the CCTV footage suggests that around 10 individuals were involved in the assault, however, some hospital staff alleged that the group consisted of 30 individuals.
