Kolkata: After failing to respond to a show cause notice issued to the former principal of RG Kar Medical College Sandip Ghosh, the West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) on Wednesday evening cancelled his medical registration following allegations of his involvement in financial irregularities at the state-run hospital during his tenure.

The show cause notice was issued to Ghosh on September 7 seeking a satisfactory reply. The council had earlier warned him that failure to respond would lead to cancellation of his registration from the council. However, he failed to respond to the notice for over a week.

Medical Dialogue recently reported that the National Medical Commission (NMC) contacted the council seeking information as to why Dr Sandip Ghosh's registration had not been cancelled. A letter was sent to the state medical council at the end of last week, and a response from the council to the NMC was anticipated on Tuesday.

A senior official of the West Bengal Medical Council informed that the registration of a person is not cancelled till the accused is convicted. However, the council yesterday announced the cancellation of Ghosh's medical registration in the evening, as per the Statesman report.

Previously, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) accused Sandip Ghosh of delaying the registration of an FIR in connection with the rape and murder of a postgraduate doctor trainee. The officials also reported that Ghosh gave "deceptive" answers to important questions during a polygraph test.

Ghosh was found to be ''deceptive'' while answering important questions on the rape and murder of a woman postgraduate trainee doctor during his polygraph test and layered voice analysis. He was arrested by the CBI on September 2 for alleged financial irregularities at the hospital, and additional charges of evidence tampering have since been brought against him.

The trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered in the seminar hall of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital when she had gone to rest during her shift in the early hours of August 9. Her body with severe injury marks was found in the hall by a doctor who was on rounds.

Sanjay Roy, a police volunteer, was arrested the next day based on CCTV footage in which he was seen entering the seminar hall at 4.03 am on the day of the incident.

On August 13, the Calcutta High Court ordered the case to be transferred from the Kolkata Police to the CBI, which officially took over the investigation on August 14.
