Delay in cancellation of Sandip Ghosh's registration: NMC writes to State Medical Council
Kolkata: It has been more than a week since the West Bengal Medical Council served show cause notice to RG Kar Medical College's former principal Sandip Ghosh over his alleged involvement in financial irregularities at the state-run hospital during his tenure, however, no action of cancelling his registration has been taken yet by the council.
This led the National Medical Commission (NMC) to contact the council seeking information as to why Dr Sandip Ghosh's registration had not been cancelled. A letter was sent to the state medical council at the end of last week, and a response from the council to the NMC is anticipated on Tuesday.
Medical Dialogues had previously reported that the State Medical Council also served a show-cause notice to Ghosh on September 7 for his alleged involvement in financial irregularities at the state-run hospital when he was in charge of its affairs after he was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). It was reported that Ghosh was asked to reply satisfactorily or else the State Medical Council would cancel his registration.
Speaking to Millenium Post, a senior official of the West Bengal Medical Council said in this regard, "The medical registration of a person is not cancelled till the accused is convicted. Otherwise, the council holds a governing body meeting in case anybody is involved in unwarranted activities. The final decision to call the governing body meeting will be taken by an official of the council."
Medical Dialogues recently reported that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) accused Sandip Ghosh of delaying the registration of an FIR in connection with the rape and murder of a postgraduate doctor trainee. The officials also reported that Ghosh gave "deceptive" answers to important questions during a polygraph test.
Ghosh was found to be ''deceptive'' while answering important questions on the rape and murder of a trainee woman postgraduate doctor during his polygraph test and layered voice analysis. He was arrested by the CBI on September 2 for alleged financial irregularities at the hospital, and additional charges of evidence tampering have since been brought against him.
The trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered in the seminar hall of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital when she had gone to rest during her shift in the early hours of August 9. Her body with severe injury marks was found in the hall by a doctor who was on rounds.
Sanjay Roy, a police volunteer, was arrested the next day based on CCTV footage in which he was seen entering the seminar hall at 4.03 am on the day of the incident.
On August 13, the Calcutta High Court ordered the case to be transferred from the Kolkata Police to the CBI, which officially took over the investigation on August 14.
