200 Private Hospitals face action for non-compliance under Ayushman Bharat in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow: In a move aimed at strengthening healthcare standards under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), the Uttar Pradesh government has taken action against nearly 200 private hospitals for allegedly failing to comply with prescribed norms, officials said on Friday.

According to the news reports, acting on directives issued by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, payments to around 100 hospitals have been stopped, while another 100 have been suspended from the flagship health insurance scheme.

Archana Verma, CEO, SACHIS, UP, said the move is part of the government’s effort to improve transparency, accountability, and the quality of treatment provided to economically weaker patients covered under the Ayushman scheme.

Speaking to TOI, she informed that the process of empanelment and monitoring of hospitals has now been made stricter through the Hospital Empanelment Module (HEM) 2.0 portal. “Under the revised system, hospitals are required to comply with 35 standards, including valid registration certificates, fire safety clearance, infrastructure requirements, doctor qualifications, and mandatory healthcare registrations,” she said.

Officials further stated that hospitals had been repeatedly informed and assisted through emails, phone calls, virtual meetings, and official communications to complete the migration to the new portal. While over 95% of empanelled hospitals have complied with the revised requirements, around 200 private hospitals failed to do so despite multiple reminders.

The CEO informed these include hospitals from several districts such as Agra, Aligarh, Prayagraj, Amethi, Amroha, Azamgarh, Baghpat, Banda, Barabanki, Bareilly, Basti, Bijnor, Bulandshahr, Chandauli, Chitrakoot, Deoria, Farrukhabad, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Ghaziabad, Gonda, Gorakhpur, Hardoi, Hathras, Jaunpur, Jhansi, Kannauj, Kanpur Nagar, Kushinagar, Lalitpur, Lucknow, Mathura, Mau, Meerut, Moradabad, Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur, Pratapgarh, Sant Kabir Nagar, Sultanpur, Varanasi, Shahjahanpur, Jalaun, Mirzapur, Ambedkar Nagar, Rampur and Sonbhadra, reports UNI.

Officials said the action was necessary to ensure that beneficiaries receive standards-based and quality healthcare services under the scheme. The government has also directed all empanelled hospitals to obtain NABH certification and has intensified regular audits and monitoring at both state and district levels, reports TOI.

In addition, Uttar Pradesh is advancing its healthcare digitisation drive through the adoption of Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM)-enabled hospital management systems and the phased rollout of Electronic Health Records (EHR) to improve transparency and patient data management.

Authorities also said that monitoring has been tightened in cases involving alleged misuse of doctors’ degrees and credentials, with strict action being taken under existing rules.
