Amit Shah to inaugurate New KLE Medical College Building, 1,200-bed Hospital in Hubballi

Hubballi: The new academic facilities of KLE Jagadguru Gangadhar Mahaswamigalu Moorusavirmath Medical College (JGMMMC) and the 1,200-bed KLE Hospital and Medical Research Centre (HMRC) at Gabbur in Hubballi will be inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on September 19, 2026. 

The integrated academic medical campus, spread across 50 acres, has been developed at an estimated cost of Rs 700 crore and has a built-up area of more than 30 lakh sq ft. The land for the campus was donated by Sir Gangadhara Rajayogindra Swami of Moorusavir Mutt.

Addressing reporters in Hubballi on Wednesday, KLE Chairman Emeritus and KLE Academy of Higher Education and Research (KAHER), Belagavi, Chancellor Prabhakar Kore said the dedication ceremony would be held in the presence of Jagadguru Shri Gurusiddha Rajayogindra Mahaswamiji of Moorusavirmath.

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, Karnataka Medical Education and Skill Development Minister Sharanaprakash R Patil and Labour and Employment Minister Santosh S Lad are also expected to attend the event.

Speaking to the Hindu, Mr. Kore, who is also a former Rajya Sabha member, said that the medical college received approval from the National Medical Commission in October 2021 with an annual intake of 150 MBBS students. “It admitted its first batch in February 2022. The intake was raised to 200 seats in the 2025-26 academic year and has been increased to 250 seats from 2026-27,” he said.

The college currently has five batches comprising around 800 MBBS students. Postgraduate programmes in 20 departments are scheduled to be introduced from the next academic year. According to Kore, inspections for the PG courses have been completed and the institution is expecting approval for 60 seats.

The medical college campus has lecture theatres, simulation laboratories, museums, research facilities, a central library, and hostels. Faculty members have received competitive research grants, including a Rs 1.4 crore grant from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), while students are involved in ICMR Short-Term Studentship and KAHER-funded research projects.

Mr. Kore said that the KLE Hospital and Medical Research Centre (HMRC) began services on January 1, 2025. “The 1,200-bed teaching hospital offers multi-specialty and super-specialty services, with facilities including operation theatres, intensive care units, emergency and trauma care, laboratories and advanced diagnostic services. We are offering healthcare facilities at affordable prices. For the poor, we have earmarked 300 beds. We are providing free and subsidised treatment to them,” Mr. Kore said, reports the Hindu.

The hospital currently offers specialties including general medicine, general surgery, orthopaedics, pulmonology, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, ophthalmology, emergency medicine and ENT. Its super-specialty services include neurology, neurosurgery, gastroenterology, nephrology, urology and endocrinology.

Cardiology, oncology and organ transplantation services are expected to be introduced subsequently.

According to Kore, the hospital sees more than 1,000 outpatients daily and treats an average of 300 inpatients. He said the institution aims to provide medical education and healthcare at affordable prices to residents of Hubballi-Dharwad and districts across North Karnataka.

The press conference was attended by former director of KLE Society Shankranna Munavalli, present director Manjunath Munavalli, KAHER Vice-Chancellor Sandeep Srivastava, JGMMC Director M.G. Hiremath, Pro-Chancellor of KLE Technological University Ashok Shettar, and senior faculty members.
