Apollo launches Integrated Liver Cancer Clinic in Chennai
Chennai: In a meaningful step towards transforming liver cancer care in India, Apollo Proton Cancer Centre (APCC), Chennai, announced the launch of Apollo's Advanced Liver Cancers Clinic, the first-ever all-under-one-roof integrated clinic dedicated to primary liver cancers and liver metastases.
The clinic was inaugurated by Mr. Radhakrishnan Thiagarajan, IPS (ADGP - Retd.) in the presence of Mr. Karan Puri, Chief Executive Officer, ACC & APCC and Dr Sujith Kumar Mullapally, Consultant – Medical Oncology, APCC.
Over the past decade, liver cancer burden has increased significantly in India, accounting for nearly 6% of the world's liver cancer cases. This is because of the steady rise in hepatitis infections, alcoholic liver disease, obesity, and delayed detection. Tamil Nadu is witnessing an unrelenting increment in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and metastases to the liver, especially in patients with underlying liver diseases.
HCC is the most common form of liver cancer, usually developing from long-term damage to the liver, such as scarring (cirrhosis) caused by chronic hepatitis B or C, heavy alcohol use or fatty liver disease. The absence of specialized, liver-specific multidisciplinary programs has resulted in treatment gaps and often late interventions.
Apollo’s Advanced Liver Cancers Clinic addresses this gap by offering an evidence-based, coordinated care model that brings together specialists from medical oncology, surgical gastroenterology, hepatobiliary surgery, radiation oncology, interventional radiology, medical genetics, pathology, anaesthesia, pain, and palliative care. The clinic will also contribute to Apollo’s treatment protocols, prospective data collection, research, and innovation.
The clinic was inaugurated by Mr. Radhakrishnan Thiagarajan, IPS (ADGP - Retd.), Director, LCP and LTP Group of Companies, who also launched his personal memoir "A Victory Over the Insidious Killer"—a deeply moving narrative of his cancer journey.
Chief Guest, Mr. Radhakrishnan Thiagarajan, IPS (ADGP - Retd.) remarked, “Having personally navigated the challenges of cancer, I deeply value the importance of early, structured and empathetic care. The Advanced Liver Cancers Clinic is not just a medical milestone, it’s a symbol of hope for countless patients and families facing this battle.”
Mr. Karan Puri, Chief Executive Officer, ACC & APCC said, “With the launch of Apollo’s Advanced Liver Cancers Clinic, we are taking a calibrated approach towards redefining liver cancer care in India. This clinic exemplifies our commitment to not just offering world-class clinical care but also building disease-specific centres of excellence that foster innovation, collaboration, and hope.”
Dr Sujith Kumar Mullapally Consultant – Medical Oncology, Apollo Proton Caner Centre, added, “Liver cancers and cancers with early Liver metastases (especially 1-3) require a unique blend of clinical expertise and coordination. The ALCC will enable us to create standardised treatment pathways, conduct prospective research, and explore emerging therapies — all while placing the patient at the centre of everything we do.”
The event also featured sessions led by leading experts on the latest in hepatocellular carcinoma management, interventional oncology techniques like TARE (Transarterial Radioembolization is a minimally invasive liver cancer treatment in which an interventional radiologist threads a tiny catheter into the artery feeding the tumour and injects radioactive microspheres that lodge in the tumour to deliver high-dose radiation directly and destroy cancer cells over time.), surgical innovations, precision diagnostics, and the future of proton therapy in liver cancers. A multidisciplinary tumor board and guided tour of APCC’s cutting-edge proton facility concluded the day’s program.
With the introduction of Apollo’s Advanced Liver Cancers Clinic Apollo Cancer Centres reinforces its vision of delivering not only curative care but also compassionate and coordinated solutions for some of the most complex oncological challenges in India.
