Mumbai: Cancer remains the illness most feared across the globe. But to combat these ongoing challenges, cancer diagnostics techniques and technology advancements are helping early detection rates, improving life expectancy, and bridging the cancer care gap.

In this ongoing fight against cancer, treatments are being revamped by adopting modern technologies that have moved cancer care forward by leaps and bounds and enhancing patients’ quality of life. Among these advancements, Robotic Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy (RNSM) combined with TiLoop implant reconstruction stands out as a groundbreaking development in breast surgery.

In an innovative medical milestone, Apollo Cancer Centre, Navi Mumbai, has successfully performed Maharashtra's First Robotic Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy with Reconstruction Using TiLoop— a pioneering procedure in breast cancer prevention and reconstruction. This achievement marks a significant advancement in oncological safety and aesthetic outcomes for patients.

The surgery was successfully led by Dr Sandip Bipte, Consultant, Breast Surgeon at Apollo Cancer Centre, Navi Mumbai, along with a skilled multidisciplinary team of clinicians.

Mrs. Jyoti (name changed on request), a 43-year-old woman, was diagnosed with right breast cancer in 2024. Considering her age, genetic testing was done which revealed BRCA gene positive, indicating a 70-80% lifetime risk of developing cancer in her left breast.

After undergoing breast-conserving surgery on the right side six months back, she was hesitant to proceed with a prophylactic mastectomy on the left breast due to concerns about extensive reconstructive surgery and its potential physical and emotional toll. However, the fear of developing cancer in her other breast lingered.

When Mrs. Jyoti learned about Robotic Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy with immediate reconstruction, she consulted Dr. Bipte, who reassured her about the safety, effectiveness, and superior cosmetic outcomes of RNSM—an advanced technique specifically designed for prophylactic breast surgery in BRCA-positive women.

Convinced of the benefits, she underwent RNSM with immediate reconstruction using TiLoop on January 3rd, 2025. The four-hour surgery was seamless, and she achieved an excellent cosmetic outcome. Remarkably, she was discharged the next day, experiencing a smooth and rapid recovery.

The RNSM procedure offered several key advantages, including preserved skin and nipple, maintaining a natural breast appearance, no visible scars on the breast, and ensuring an excellent cosmetic outcome. Additionally, it also provided better sensory preservation compared to conventional mastectomy, minimally invasive approach, leading to faster healing and minimal discomfort, while preserving body integrity.

Traditionally, breast reconstruction in India has relied on autologous tissue techniques like LD flap, DIEP flap, and TRAM flap. They involve extensive surgery, longer operating time, additional scars on different parts of the body, higher morbidity, and prolonged hospital stays with increased chances of complications.

With advancements in surgical techniques, robotic nipple-sparing mastectomy combined with modern reconstruction options offers a minimally invasive, safer, and aesthetically superior alternative. This approach reduces trauma, speeds up recovery, and enhances overall patient outcomes, setting a new standard in breast cancer and prophylactic surgery.

Dr Suresh H. Advani, Senior Consultant, Medical Oncology, Apollo Cancer Centre, and a recipient of Padma Bhushan & Padma Shri Awards, said, “The procedure, which is Maharashtra's First Robotic Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy with TiLoop Reconstruction, is not just a technical achievement; it is a testament to the ever-evolving understanding of compassionate cancer care. This approach elevates the standards of treatment while prioritizing the dignity and emotional resilience of patients. As we embrace such innovations, we must remember that the crucial role of oncology lies in empowering individuals with hope, restoring their sense of self, and transforming fear into courage.”

Dr. Sandip Bipte, Consultant- Breast Surgeon, Apollo Cancer Centre, Navi Mumbai, said, “The Robotic Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy with TiLoop reconstruction exemplifies the synergy of cutting-edge technology and innovative surgical techniques, offering patients a safer, less invasive, and more effective treatment option.

This advanced approach ensures precise cancer clearance, preserves the nipple-areola complex, and significantly enhances the patient's quality of life after breast cancer treatment. By prioritizing both physical and emotional well-being, we aim to empower patients with a renewed sense of confidence and self-assurance.”

Dr Jayanti Thumsi, Lead & Robotic Surgeon - Breast Oncology, Apollo Cancer Centre, Bangalore, said, “Breast cancer surgery is evolving, offering women better outcomes. With first-hand experience of performing Robotic Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy with TiLoop-assisted Breast reconstruction, I’ve seen how technology enhances precision, recovery, and aesthetics. Embracing such innovations can ensure that every woman gets the best possible care. After all the goal is not only survival but the one which comes with confidence and dignity.”

Cancer winner, Mrs. Jyoti, said, “I'm grateful for the life-changing experience at Apollo Cancer Centre, Navi Mumbai. Dr. Sandip Bipte and his team's expertise gave me a second chance to continue living my life with pride. The seamless surgery and rapid recovery exceeded my expectations. I feel empowered, confident, and grateful for this advanced treatment that has restored my sense of self and allowed me to take control of my health. I can now focus on living life to the fullest, free from the fear of cancer.”

This innovative approach exemplifies the continuous evolution of medical technologies aimed at enhancing patient outcomes and experiences in the realm of breast cancer treatment.

In India, breast cancer rates are notably high, especially among young women, constituting 48% of cases.
