Bengaluru: Pvt hospital's portico collapses; 1 dead and three labourers injured

Bengaluru: Karnataka Fire and Emergency Services personnel have rescued four labourers stuck beneath the collapsed portico of a private hospital in Bengaluru whereas one labourer had died, unfortunately.

There was no movement of patients or people at the time of the incident at at 6.15 a.m. on Saint Martha's hospital premises. The hospital authorities have promised to provide free treatment to the injured labourers. 

The fire department stated that the building was constructed poorly which could be the reason of the incident. At around 7 am, the fire department released a crane and two earthmovers along with two rescue team upon receiving calls from the site. It took nearly three hours to get the workers out of the debris.

The portico arch had collapsed early Tuesday morning. The labourers -- Moyuddeen, Chand Pasha, Rafi Saab, Basavaraj -- were rescued after the personnel carried out a mission for more than three hours.

However, Moyuddeen and Pasha were out within few mins whereas on the other hand Rafiq and Basavaraj had taken few hours to get them out from the debris. The rescue team headed by Hemanth Kumar K, District Fire Officer (South) handled the mission successfully. 

DCP in-charge of Central Division Dr S.D. Sharanappa said: "We will verify the documents in connection with the incident and initiate action."

A senior official from the department told DH "We suspect that substandard work led to the incident. The canopy didn't have columns (pillars). It was around 30 feet wide and was about 20 feet high."

A case has been registered against the individuals responsible for the incident including engineers, contractors etc under Section 304A (causing death by negligence) of IPC. Police said that an investigation is underway. 

Police sources explained that the portico collapsed due to installation of insufficient load bearing pillars.
