BLK-Max Hospital doctors reattach woman's severed hand in 12-hour surgery
New Delhi: In a remarkable medical achievement, doctors at BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital successfully reattached half of a young woman's palm and four fingers which were severed following a tragic machinery accident.
20-year-old Nikita Kumar presented to the hospital bleeding profusely and severed right hand palm. She arrived at the BLK-Max Hospital’s Emergency within 30 minutes of the unfortunate incident. She had inadvertently placed her hand in a foam cutting machine while delivering lunch to her brothers at their factory, resulting in the amputation of all her fingers at the mid-palm level of her right hand.
The Plastic Surgery team, led by Dr Lokesh Kumar, Principal Director & HOD - Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery, took immediate action to preserve the amputated parts and control the bleeding, laying the groundwork for an effective medical procedure.
The complicated surgery lasted 12-hours and involved specialised repair of arteries, veins, nerves, tendons, and bones, culminating in the successful reattachment of Nikita’s right hand. Due to the expertise and swift response of the Plastic Surgery Department at BLK-Max Hospital, Nikita is now on the path to recovery and is expected to regain full functionality of her hand.
Following the successful reattachment surgery, the young girl is undergoing intensive physiotherapy aimed at restoring full functionality to her hand. Despite the severity of the injury, there are promising signs as she already feels sensation in her fingers, indicating potential nerve regeneration. With dedicated rehabilitation and support from medical professionals, she is anticipated to regain strength, dexterity, and range of motion in her hand over time, added Dr Avtar Singh Bath, Senior Director - Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery, BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital.
Nikita has been discharged. This incident serves as a reminder to the general public and medical first responders about the critical importance of knowing what to do in such emergencies. Time is of the essence. Immediate steps include controlling bleeding, proper preservation of the amputated part, and swift transport to a medical facility with expertise in reattachment procedures. At BLK-Max Hospital, the Department of Plastic Surgery has a highly skilled and experienced team of surgeons specialising in reattachment procedures, ensuring a high success rate.
