Breaking News: Dr M Srinivas, Dean of ESIC Hyderabad, appointed Director of AIIMS Delhi

New Delhi: Ending all speculations around who is going to be the next AIIMS, New Delhi Director, Dr. M Srinivas, Dean, ESIC Medical College and Hospital, Hyderabad has been appointed as Director, All Indian Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.

The order, dated 23rd September 2022, issued by the Department of Personnel and Training said the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) had approved the appointment of Dr. Srinivas to the post of Director, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi.

The appointment is "for a period of five years w.e.f the date of assumption of charge of the post, or till attaining the age of 65, or until further orders, whichever is the earliest", reads the order.

"Ex-post facto approval for continuation of Dr. Randeep Guleria as Director AIIMS, New Delhi wef March 25, 2022, for six months, or till joining of the new Director, whichever is earlier," the official notice stated further.

Dr. M Srinivas will replace Dr. Randeep Guleria, whose tenure ends today. Dr. Randeep Guleria had received an extension for Director AIIMS- New Delhi twice. 

Dr. M Srinivas is currently Dean of Employees State Insurance Company (ESIC) Hospital and Medical College in Hyderabad. He was a professor in the Department of Pediatric Surgery at AIIMS Delhi before he joined ESIC Hospital and Medical College in Hyderabad in 2016. He has been selected from a pool of 32 eminent doctors who were vying for the post. It's worth noting that the post of the Director of the premier institute, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi, is considered very prestigious so special consideration has been adopted for the appointment.

Earlier, 32 names were discussed by the search cum selection committee members for the post of director of AIIMS, but gradually it decreased. In March, the names of three doctors, short-listed and subsequently approved by the Institute Body, the top decision-making body of the AIIMS, were sent to the ACC for final approval. The three AIIMS doctors whose names were recommended earlier were Nikhil Tandon, head of the department of endocrinology; Rajesh Malhotra, chief of AIIMS Trauma Centre and the head of the department of orthopedics; and Pramod Garg, professor in the gastroenterology department.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), headed by the prime minister on June 20, sought a wider panel of names for the post of director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here.

Dr. Randeep Guleria joined AIIMS as an assistant professor in 1992 and has been the HoD of the department of pulmonary medicine and sleep disorders, since April 2011. Dr. Guleria was conferred with the prestigious "Padma Shri" Award in 2015 by the President of India and recently with "Dr. B.C. Roy Award in the category Eminent Medical Person" for the year 2014.

Dr. Guleria was appointed as the director for a term of five years on March 28, 2017. He has been at the forefront during the COVID-19 pandemic, spearheading patient care at the most prestigious medical institutions in the country.
