Observing that the citizens of Kolkata usually visit Mumbai in order to receive better cancer treatments, the state government has assured to provide the state with the same quality treatment here.

In order to provide the same quality of cancer treatments here, the government selected a team of doctors, nurses and technologists who were sent to TMC, Mumbai to complete the training course and head back to Kolkata. As a result, the trained medical personnel will run the clinic providing the same top-notch cancer treatments to the patients.

As per the government, the initiative is expected to decrease the rising footfall at the Mumbai hospitals which ultimately brings loss to the hospitals here.

Explaining more about the clinic, Subhro Basu one of the doctors told TOI, "Our aim is the prevention of oral, cervical and breast cancer, which are the three most common forms of cancer. As 10% of cancers are genetic, we are planning family history-based treatment, risk reduction surgeries, and proposals for lifestyle changes to reduce risks. The hospital already has departments for cancer diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. This fourth department focusing on prevention will enable us to have holistic cancer care. "

Expressing happiness about the initiative, State health secretary NS Nigam said "We must thank the community medicine department for coming up with this initiative. Having examined both hospitals — SSKM and KP Hospital — I am looking forward to the functioning of a cancer care system focusing on every angle. I hope we can replicate this model in hospitals across Bengal."
