Chandigarh administrator seeks Rs 2,000 crore for regional medical hub
Chandigarh: To strengthen public healthcare infrastructure in Chandigarh, UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria has sought Rs 2,000 crore from the Centre for the proposed Chandigarh Regional Medical Hub, along with 36 additional postgraduate medical seats for the city's medical college.
According to the news reports, Kataria raised these demands during a meeting with Union Health and Family Welfare Minister JP Nadda in New Delhi on Tuesday. The proposed medical hub is envisioned as a major tertiary and super-speciality healthcare facility catering to patients from Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and neighbouring regions.
The proposed Regional Medical Hub is planned as a 1,000-bed tertiary and super-speciality healthcare facility in Sector 53. The project will comprise a 500-bed Centre for Women and Child Healthcare and another 500-bed Centre for Super-Speciality Care, including emergency and trauma services.
The facility is also expected to include academic and research infrastructure, postgraduate medical education facilities, laboratories and other allied services.
The administration had sought central assistance for the project earlier too. In June, the Union health ministry told the UT that, as the project proponent, it would have to meet the cost from its budgetary resources. A public-private partnership would require separate approvals from the Department of Economic Affairs, reports Hindustan Times.
Kataria also met Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss efforts to make Chandigarh drug-free. The discussions focused on de-addiction and rehabilitation, along with skill development and employment opportunities for people recovering from substance abuse.
Medical Dialogues had previously reported that as Punjab witnesses a rise in swine flu (H1N1) cases, the state Health Department has directed all government and private hospitals to set up dedicated flu corners to screen patients with influenza-like illness (ILI), with the aim of ensuring timely detection and treatment. Around 350 H1N1 cases were reported in Punjab between January and September 2026.
