Delhi AIIMS set to digitize patient records

New Delhi: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, is set to fully digitize all patient records in the coming months. This move aims to streamline medical documentation, reduce the burden of physical storage, and significantly enhance patient care.

According to AIIMS officials, once the digitization process is fully implemented, the entire medical history of a patient will soon be accessible at the click of a button. By simply entering a patient’s registration number into the system, doctors and healthcare professionals will be able to retrieve reports, prescriptions, diagnostic results, and treatment histories in real-time. This will replace the current system of managing bulky physical files.

Currently, a considerable amount of time and effort is spent locating and transporting patient records, especially for those undergoing treatment for serious conditions at major healthcare facilities across the country. This often causes inconvenience and stress for patients.

To oversee this massive transformation, AIIMS Director Dr. M. Srinivas has formed an 18-member committee composed of senior doctors, IT experts, and representatives from premier institutions such as the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

Speaking to ETV Bharat, an official said, “The committee has been asked to prepare a blueprint of the exercise to be undertaken and complete the tendering process within the next three months. This committee will be responsible for the digitalisation of the AIIMS.”

AIIMS at present provides digital access to outpatient department (OPD) registrations, appointments, lab reports, and discharge summaries. However, reports of advanced diagnostic tests such as CT scans and MRIs are still not fully accessible online. The new digitization push seeks to close this gap and provide seamless data access across all services.

These schemes focus on enhancing patient care facilities and the expansion of the premier institute. The committee toured various departments, including the Emergency wing, Conversion Block, and the Centre for Integrative Medicine and Research (CIMR). They also reviewed ongoing research initiatives such as the integration of Yoga in treatment protocols for chronic ailments.
