Chandigarh: A state-of-the-art liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) system has been inaugurated at GMCH Sector-32, Chandigarh, marking a major leap in the hospital’s diagnostic capabilities.

The advanced equipment was unveiled on Monday by Mandip Singh Brar, Home Secretary-cum-Secretary of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh Administration, at the biochemistry department of GMCH, Sector 32.

The biochemistry department will now expand its services, beginning with an extended newborn metabolic screening programme. Using just a single dried blood spot, the system can help in the early detection of over 40 inherited metabolic disorders, enabling timely treatment interventions for high-risk infants.

Furthermore, the technology is being used to start therapeutic drug monitoring of anti-epileptic drugs, ensuring high-precision results for optimal patient management across various clinical departments, reports TOI

The upgrade comes alongside other initiatives to bolster diagnostic services at GMCH.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that in a move aimed at improving diagnostic services and reducing patient waiting time, the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH-32) is set to introduce CT scan and MRI facilities under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Hospital officials said that the initiative will not only speed up access to reports for patients but also provide dedicated machines for medical students to gain practical training.
According to Prof G.P. Thami, Director Principal of GMCH-32, the patient load has seen a dramatic surge over the past decade. In 2014, the hospital recorded 5.22 lakh OPD visits, which rose to 6.53 lakh in 2024. Departments such as general surgery, medicine, and orthopaedics continue to witness the maximum rush, with daily footfalls ranging from 2,200 to 2,500 patients from across the region.
