Delhi CM sets August 1 Deadline to complete Sanjay Gandhi Hospital Trauma block
New Delhi: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced August 1, 2025, as the final deadline for the completion of the new trauma block at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Mangolpuri. The announcement came during her visit to the hospital on Saturday, where she conducted a comprehensive review of the ongoing construction work.
Speaking to TOI, Gupta said the new building, which includes a 362-bed trauma block, was initiated years ago, but has remained incomplete to date. "We conducted a detailed review of the project on Saturday and issued directives to expedite the work. A firm deadline of Aug 1, 2025, is set for the completion of the new building," she announced.
Gupta added that the government is prepared to allocate additional budget or resources as needed to meet the completion timeline.
According to the news reports, the upcoming building will feature 42 ICU beds, equally distributed among the medical, surgical, and orthopaedic ICUs, with 14 beds each. Upon completion of the trauma block, the hospital’s total bed capacity will rise from 300 to 662. The new facility will also include essential infrastructure such as a parking lot, a mortuary, and other critical support services.
"The projects left incomplete by the previous govt will now be completed by ours. Our aim is to make this hospital fully functional and efficient in the service of the public as soon as possible," Gupta said, TOI reports.
The project is part of 24 greenfield and brownfield healthcare projects initiated by the previous administration but stalled midway.
Medical Dialogues had previously reported that Delhi will get a 362-bed trauma centre at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Mangolpuri by May 31, as the Public Works Department (PWD) is finishing the last leg of work at the medical facility, officials said.
According to officials, this will be the biggest trauma centre among Delhi government hospitals. The hospital has missed multiple deadlines, however, the officials said that the PWD will finish the work by May 31.
To prevent any shortage of medicines in Delhi’s hospitals, the Chief Minister stated that officials have been given clear instructions to address such issues on a priority basis. She also noted that a dedicated medical superintendent has been appointed for each state-run hospital to oversee overall management and ensure smooth functioning.’
During her visit, CM Gupta also addressed broader challenges facing Delhi’s government hospitals. One major issue is the shortage of beds—despite being a 300-bed multispecialty hospital, Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital handles a daily OPD load of 2,600–2,700 patients, far exceeding its capacity.
The hospital also has a dedicated Maternal and Child Health (MCH) unit with 150 beds—100 for obstetrics and gynaecology, and 50 for paediatrics—but rising patient numbers continue to strain the system.
