Delhi: Fire breaks out at AIIMS Research Wing, COVID lab gutted
Delhi: A fire broke out at the Research Wing of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) hospital in New Delhi, late on Wednesday night.
No casualties have been reported yet, however, the Covid-19 laboratory in the building was completely gutted.
As per media reports, the blaze was reported from the ninth floor of the Convergence Block, a non-patient wing where various diagnostic labs and examination sections are located. The building also houses the AIIMS' SET (Skills, e-Learning, Telemedicine) facility, auditorium, labs and research wings.
22 fire tenders were immediately rushed to the place and the fire was finally brought under control.
"At least 20 fire tenders were rushed to the hospital after the alert. The fire is under control now," informed Delhi Fire Service Director Atul Garg.

The unfortunate incident took place two days before AIIMS Delhi was supposed to re-open the Outpatient Department (OPD) services in a phased manner due to a significant decrease in COVID cases. For almost two months the OPD services remained were suspended amidst a surge in Covid-19 cases. No changes in the plan have been informed by the authorities yet.
Meanwhile, officials have not been able to ascertain the cause of the fire yet. However, preliminary information suggests that a short circuit led to it.
