Delhi hospital owner receives death threat, Rs 20 crore extortion demand
New Delhi: The owner of a private hospital in Nihal Vihar, outer Delhi, allegedly received a death threat and an extortion demand of Rs 20 crore from a caller claiming links with gangster Lawrence Bishnoi's gang, according to the FIR registered by the police on Thursday.
According to PTI, the complainant, who owns the hospital, received the extortion demand through social media from an international number on November 3, the sources said.
The caller allegedly claimed to have conducted reconnaissance of the hospital and gave the complainant 24 hours to arrange the money, warning him of serious consequences if the demand was not met.
The complainant also told police that he had received a threatening voice message from the same number a day earlier, on November 2.
An FIR has been registered at Nihal Vihar police station, and further investigation is underway. Police are examining the threat from multiple angles, including the caller’s identity, the alleged gang connection and the motive behind the extortion demand, the sources said.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that a doctor in Dhubri was allegedly threatened and forced to pay Rs 85,000 after a group of four men demanded Rs 3 lakh from him, police sources said. Three of the accused have been arrested in connection with the alleged extortion attempt, while another accused remains absconding.
According to police sources, the accused allegedly targeted a medical practitioner on Sunday and demanded Rs 3 lakh. The doctor, reportedly fearing for his safety, allegedly paid Rs 65,000 through PhonePe as an advance and handed over another Rs 20,000 in cash at the spot to the owner of an under-construction medical shop and chamber.
