Medical Negligence

Chennai: Medical negligence has been alleged after a 31-year-old woman died on Saturday following a procedure at a private fertility clinic in Mandaveli, prompting protests from her family.

According to police, the woman, a homemaker from Adhanur, had been trying to conceive for the past three years. The couple approached the clinic seeking fertility treatment, during which doctors reportedly identified a cyst in her uterus and advised a minor procedure at the same facility.

The clinic authorities reportedly assured the family that the woman would regain consciousness within an hour after the procedure. However, when she did not wake up, she was shifted to a nearby private hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Her body was later sent to the Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem examination, police said.

Meanwhile, her relatives protested near the hospital mortuary, alleging negligence by the doctors and demanded action. They dispersed after the police intervention, and traffic was restored. Police said the matter has been referred to the medical council, reports TNIE.

The woman’s brother alleged that negligence by the hospital and inadequate infrastructure led to her death and demanded that those responsible be arrested.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, Mukundhan, Inspector of Abhiramapuram Police Station, said the police have questioned the administration of the fertility clinic. "We conducted an inquiry with the administration of the fertility treatment centre involved regarding the woman's death. They explained that the deceased woman was obese and that surgery was performed under anaesthesia to address this condition; however, she passed away due to a lack of adequate oxygen supply," the Inspector said. “The Medical Council and the Directorate of Medical Services have been informed. Further action will be taken based on the report submitted by these authorities following their inquiry, as well as the findings of the post-mortem examination,” he said.
