Fire breaks out at Delhi Hospital, 20 newborns rescued

New Delhi: A fire broke out at a hospital in West Delhi's Janakpuri area in the early hours of Friday, twenty newborns were safely rescued and shifted to different nearby hospitals by the Delhi fire service.

Twenty newborns were rescued by the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) after a fire broke out in the room of a Newborn Child Hospital in Vaishali Colony, New Delhi, the police said on Friday.

According to Delhi Police, nine fire tenders rushed to the spot and all the 20 newborn babies were rescued safely by the DFS and shifted to nearby hospitals.

"We received a call at 1.35 am that a fire broke out at a hospital. We sent four fire tenders first. They told us that there are 20 newborns there and they are facing difficulty as the lane is narrow. We sent about four more fire tenders. We reached there on time and the fire was extinguished, "Atul Garg, director of Delhi Fire Service.

The Police added that out of the 20 newborns, 13 were shifted to Arya Hospital Janakpuri and two to the Dwarka More Newborn Child Hospital.

Two were shifted to JK Hospital Janakpuri and three newborn babies were discharged from the Newborn child hospital in Vaishali.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. "Our investigation is on," police said.

As per a media report in TOI, some furniture items in the basement of the hospital had caught fire.

Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that a fire broke out inside the boy's hostel at Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) in New Delhi. Seven fire tenders were rushed to the site and no casualties were reported. The fire broke out at a hostel of the Maulana Azad Medical College, but there was no loss of life, officials said. According to them, the information about the blaze at the old boys' hostel was received at 6.09 am.
