GMC Baramulla has no sanctioned Orthodontist Post, says JnK Govt
GMC Baramulla
Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir government has clarified that Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla currently has no sanctioned post for an Orthodontist, stating that the question of vacancies at the institution “does not arise.” The statement came in response to an Assembly query raised by MLA Dr. Sajjad Shafi from Uri.
The MLA had expressed concerns that the absence of an orthodontist at GMC Baramulla might force students to seek treatment at Government Dental College, Srinagar, potentially creating a financial burden for their families.

In response, the Minister for Health and Medical Education explained that regular health screenings for school children are conducted under the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK). Children identified with dental and orthodontic issues are referred to designated health institutions for appropriate treatment.
The minister, however, maintained that routine dental services are being effectively provided at GMC Baramulla. Cases requiring specialised orthodontic intervention are referred to the Government Dental College, Srinagar, where treatment, including appliances, is provided free of cost under RBSK. “This ensures that no eligible child is deprived of care due to financial constraints,” the reply said, reports Rising Kashmir.
When asked if the government plans to fill a post of Orthodontist or deputize a specialist to GMC Baramulla, the minister stated that since no post has been sanctioned, no appointment can be made. She further confirmed that no proposal is currently under consideration to create such a post or arrange services through deputation or any other mechanism.
