GMCH staff suspended for allegedly misbehaving with patient's attendant

Guwahati: Chaos erupted at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) after a Grade IV employee allegedly abused a patient's attendant on Tuesday. In response to this, the Medical Superintendent of the hospital placed the latter under suspension with immediate effect until further orders. 

Apart from misbehaving with the patient's attendant, the staff also punched the person who turned out to be an SSB personnel in uniform which prompted the hospital authorities to take action against the staff immediately. 

The incident took place at the Cardiothoracic and Neuroscience Centre of GMCH when the employee started a fight with the patient's attendant after the attendant refused to give him money. Ultimately, the employee began abusing the attendant and then physically assaulted the person.

The entire incident was caught in the CCTV of the MRD office which showed the employee in a rage attacking the attendant in front of all the hospital staff at the centre of GMCH.

As per the statements of the victim, the employee started abusing him for no reason while he was waiting for his relative who was admitted to the ICU. 

“I was waiting for my relative who was admitted to the ICU. Das came and started asking me for money. I told him that I did not have any money. He then started abusing me and even punched me,” the attendant said.  

Following this, the incident was reported to the Medical Superintendent Abhijeet Sharma who suspended the employee on the same day. 

In addition, a committee has been set up consisting of Additional Superintendent, GMCH, PK Das, Deputy Superintendent, DR Das, Secretary, Pranab Das and Head Assistant, Mukul Das to further enquire about the matter and submit a report within 48 hours.

An order issued by GMCH on Tuesday mentioned “Pending departmental proceeding Bimal Kr Das, GR-IV staff, GMCH is hereby placed under suspension with immediate effect under further orders for misbehaviour and physical assault to an SSB personal in uniform which has been recorded in the CCTV footage of MRD Office. A copy letter received from MRO, Medical Record Department, GMCH in this regard.”

Further, the superintendent assured patients and attendants that if violence erupts at the hospital, necessary action will be taken and their safety will be prioritized. Therefore, he appealed to patients and their attendants to report any kind of violence or misconduct by GMCH employees to the authorities immediately.

Talking to G Plus, GMCH Superintendent, Dr Abhijit Sharma said, “After the incident, the SSB personnel reached out to me and we took immediate action. Further investigation is going on.”
