Patient dies during CT Scan, 4 on-duty doctors beaten up by mob
Nagpur: In yet another case of violence against doctors, four on-duty doctors at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Nagpur were attacked by a mob of the patient's relatives after the death of a 37-year-old man during a CT scan.
The police have arrested the accused who assaulted the doctors and registered an FIR against them.
The incident took place on Monday in the Ward No 86 Radiology department of GMC around noon when a patient was brought to GMC for treatment in critical condition due to abdominal pain. Although the patient's condition was critical, it drastically started to fall while doing a CT scan
An FIR was registered by the police and as a result, the relatives who assaulted the doctors were arrested. An investigation into the case is underway.
The relatives of the deceased patient manhandled the hospital staff and later a fight broke out, which resulted in the doctors being beaten. When the security personnel of the hospital were informed about the attack, they arrived late and by the time they had arrived, the doctors were already assaulted.
Later, when the patient was shifted to ICU, she died. After hearing the news, the patient's relatives began accusing the doctors of medical negligence. Following this, the doctors were abused and assaulted by their kin.
Demanding strict action against the attackers, Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) President Dr Sajal Bansal informed TLN, "The issue of the safety of doctors working in GMC has become serious. Proper security should be deployed in GMC for the safety of the doctors."
Medical Dialogues team had recently reported that a final year resident doctor of the nephrology department at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad became a subject of alleged assault and harassment by a relative over the death of their 62-year-old kin.
