Gurugram: A 62-year-old heart patient from Iraq who was allegedly duped of USD15,000 by two people died at a hospital. Faris Muslim Abbas was admitted to the hospital on October 23 following the cheating incident. He died in the early hours on October 24.

An attendant of his claimed that Abbas had chased the two people who had duped him and his wife, after which his condition worsened.

Police, however, said they checked CCTV footage of the incident and it did not show that he chased the accused. ''We got information about his death but his wife has not filed any other complaint,'' said Inspector Ved Prakash, SHO of the Sadar police station. Abbas and his wife Nada Ali Salman had come here on October 21 and they had consulted a surgeon at Medanta Hospital on October 22.

The incident occurred on October 23 around 3.30 pm, when they were going to the market, they were duped of the cash.

According to investigators, one of the two suspects impersonated a police officer in civilian clothes and forced the Iraqi national to give him the envelope with the money on the pretext of checking it for drugs and then snatched it, reports the Hindustan Times.

A private firm executive who assisted the family with the medical treatment and helped get the FIR registered, alleged that two men in a car stopped the couple to frisk them for drugs while they were returning to their hotel with groceries. Police registered an FIR under sections 34 (common intention), 379 (theft) and 420 (cheating) of Indian Penal Code at Gurugram Sadar police station on Sunday night.
