HoD Anatomy takes charge of Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences after Director takes leave amidst complaints
Belagavi: Amidst repeated complaints regarding the poor management at Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS), the former director of the institute has taken a leave from his post. Accepting his leave application, the State Medical Education Department has made the Head of the Anatomy Department, Dr. Umesh Kulkarni as the new in-charge during the director's absence.
Apart from this, the State Government has changed the deputation of Sanjiv Katte, who was earlier responsible to take care of the disposal of bodies. A matron and six nurses have also been transferred by the government.
These changes followed the recent inspection by the Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi, who complained of negligence by doctors and staff and other problems in the hospital attached to the government medical college.
Media reports mentioned that the Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa announced his decision to visit Belagavi and BIMS hospital after receiving various complaints from his MLAs regarding the mismanagement at the Hospital.
The Hindu adds that after inspecting the hospital the Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi was very disappointed about the condition of the medical facility. Pointing out that the hospital was worse than a cowshed he expressed his helplessness regarding the situation.
He further mentioned how most of the COVID-19 deaths in the district had occurred in BIMS alone. Accusing the doctors and staff he stated that their negligence was the responsible factor for these deaths.
During his visit, speaking to media representatives after inspecting the hospital, he said, "The service here is the worst. I am not sure in which language I should speak to these thick-skinned officers," adds New Indian Express.
"Nothing is right in the hospital. There is lack of coordination between the officials here. The ICU does not look like one. Relatives of patients are allowed inside the hospital and they dry clothes on the bed. I am confused whether this is a hospital or a fair. I will not hesitate to bring out this truth," he added.
While visiting the medical facility in a PPE suit, he mentioned, "I tried to instill confidence among the patients during the visit. But I don't know how to explain the apathy in the hospital."
"I had earlier warned the officials about the problems in the hospital. The system at BIMS Hospital must be changed," he further added.
Meanwhile, pointing out that the administrative changes in the hospital were a measure to show people that the government took serious note of the complaints related to COVID management, Ashok Chandaragi, social activist told The Hindu, "BIMS is in a mess. Doctors and nurses are not really concerned about treating patients properly. They are all negligent. We have complained to the government about this. The government is doing all this only to hoodwink the people as Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa is scheduled to visit the district."
