KEM Hospital to launch Bone Marrow Transplant Programme
Mumbai: The state-run King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital located in Parel East, Mumbai, is set to revolutionize treatment options for patients with blood disorders by launching a new bone marrow transplant programme.
This new initiative promises to offer a lifeline to individuals battling conditions such as leukaemia, lymphoma, and other severe blood disorders. The hospital has officially submitted its application for approval to the relevant authorities to begin this new service.
At present, KEM Hospital's haematology department conducts approximately 800 to 900 bone marrow examinations each year for both adults and children, with all reports processed within itself.

Given this extensive experience, the hospital aims to broaden its services. The aim is to offer a Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) programme specifically for adults with benign hematologic conditions.
During a recent event celebrating the successful completion of the hospital's 101st Total Knee Replacement (TKR) surgery, performed with an orthopaedic robot, Dr Sangeeta Ravat, the dean of KEM Hospital, revealed the new Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) programme.
According to the HT Dr Ravat stated, “We have applied for necessary approval from higher authorities for the bone marrow transplant programme. Why should it be present only in private institutions? People who come to our hospital deserve this facility too.”
The KEM hospital which was founded in 1926 was primarily funded by the Greater Mumbai Municipal Corporation. The hospital provides free medical services to underprivileged communities across the region.
However, the hospital is currently lacking financial resources which is required to establish a state-of-the-art treatment programme such as bone marrow transplants. Dr. Ravat has appealed for financial support to make this initiative a reality. She appealed “We need donors to help us. As soon as we get the funds, we can go ahead with the implementation of the programme.”
The introduction of the bone marrow transplant programme is expected to have a profound impact on the health care system of Mumbai. With this, KEM Hospital can become one of the first hospitals in Mumbai to offer bone marrow transplants for adults. And will provide a chance for many patients to overcome life-threatening conditions that were previously difficult to treat within the region.
