A 28-year-old cancer patient Rajeswar Pal underwent a bone marrow transplant at the hospital last week. A private health facility would charge lakhs of rupees for the same transplant. Private hospitals where gene therapy is provided are around Rs 30-40 lakh for the treatment.
Another 24-year-old patient underwent a bone marrow transplant a few months back at the hospital. The patient Pintu Mahanta was admitted to the hospital after which high-power chemotherapy was performed on him. For the bone marrow transplant, the doctors decided to extract Mahanta’s younger brother's bone marrow. The patient is currently improving.
Dr Tufan Dalui, Head of the Department of Hematology, as per a media report in the Millenium Post, said that the NRS Medical College is the first government-run hospital to conduct a costly transplant like bone marrow.
Last year, the college cured a blood cancer patient from Jharkhand through a bone marrow transplant. The treatment was performed free of cost and lasted over two and a half months.
