SSKM Hospital 2nd year nursing student hangs self in hostel washroom
Kolkata: In an unfortunate incident, a second-year nursing student of Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial (SSKM) Hospital in the city allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in a locked washroom of her hostel on the hospital premises in south Kolkata on Wednesday night.
According to the police, the woman was a 26-year-old student studying general nursing and midwifery course at the college.
To gain a deeper understanding of her death, the SSKM Medical College and Hospital have constituted a five-member committee to probe the matter.
Litton hostel inmates told the investigation's police officials that they informed the authorities after finding the door of the bathroom bolted from the inside and one of the inmates was not seen for a long time.
Police were informed, and after breaking the door open, the second-year nursing student was found partially hanging by a towel around her neck. Following this, she was immediately taken to the emergency room, where the medics pronounced her dead.
While investigating the case, the police found that the student was involved in an argument with someone close to her before ending her life. She was talking with someone on the call for a long time before entering the bathroom. Her classmates last spotted her around 9:30 a.m.
Speaking to TOI, the police informed that the student might have committed suicide since no foul play was found and there were no injury marks on the deceased body.
No suicide note was left behind, said the police. Therefore, they are currently investigating the case by questioning her friends and classmates to determine the exact cause of her death.
DC, South Priyabrata Roy visited the site, and Bhawanipur police lodged a diary of unnatural death and began a probe. Her body has been sent for post-mortem and police await the report.
The relatives of the girl were informed accordingly by the hospital authorities.
Analysing each side of the incident, Joint CP (Crime) Shankha Shubra Chakrabarty at Lalbazar informed The Daily, “We can conclusively say that this has no link with ragging."
A forensic examination of the victim's phone will be conducted to examine the call records she made before she died. After discovering the person with whom the student had spoken on that day, the police will question the person for more details about their conversation.
