Mumbai: The citizens of Ambernath now won't have to travel far to get treatment as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) gave its permission to establish a government medical college by approving a proposal to change the land reservation. The decision came forward in a meeting held by MMRDA.

MMRDA approved the proposal at its 152nd meeting. The proposal for a government medical college in Ambernath was raised by local MP Dr. Shrikant Shinde and MLA Dr. Balaji Kinikar, both of whom are doctors. The state's joint director of medical education wanted 11 hectares of land on survey numbers 102, 103, 104, 106, and 166 in Ambernath after medical education minister Amit Deshmukh approved the college last year.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, locals had to face a lot of difficulties due to a lack of proper medical care in the sub-districts. They had to travel from place to place in search of better medical treatment as the hospitals in the sub-district areas were under construction.

Free Press Journal reports that the most visited places for medical services are Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Thane. Due to limited healthcare facilities in Ambernath, most of the people had to move to these places for treatment.

Citizens have been given until April 21 by MMRDA to provide suggestions and objections regarding the required eleven hectares of land.

A proposal was made to get 11 hectares of land approved for a government medical college in Ambernath which had been allocated as a public park but was later approved for the college. The plot number is 180.
