Chintalavidi: Paderu Government Medical College has secured approval for a research grant of Rs. 76 lakh from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to investigate antimicrobial resistance to Meropenem, an important antibiotic used to treat severe bacterial infections. The funding has been allocated to the institution’s Department of Microbiology to examine the growing ability of disease-causing microorganisms to resist the drug.

According to the Times of India, the Director of Medical Education (DME) Dr Vishnuvardhan described the grant as a major accomplishment for the newly established medical college in the tribal region. He said the research would focus on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a phenomenon in which microorganisms develop the ability to survive medicines intended to destroy them or restrict their multiplication.

Explaining the factors responsible for antimicrobial resistance, Dr Vishnuvardhan pointed to genetic changes in microorganisms, the production of enzymes that break down drugs, and mechanisms that prevent antibiotics from entering bacterial cells. These processes can reduce the effectiveness of medicines and make infections more difficult to treat, reports the Daily.

College Principal Dr Bujjibabu said the proposed investigation would generate scientific data on antibiotic resistance patterns and provide valuable insights into the difficulties encountered in treating bacterial infections. The findings are expected to contribute to a better understanding of Meropenem resistance.

The findings should beneficial in case of determining effective treatment strategies in the future. He also informed that it is a major milestone to secure such a grant from ICMR, and it will contribute greatly to strengthening the research infrastructure and academic activities of the institute. The funding will be helpful in encouraging more medicos to take up a career in research and contribute to scientific studies, especially in the area of Public Health.

Apart from providing better medical services to the people of the tribal area, this medical college will also provide opportunities for local students to pursue MBBS medical education, increase employment opportunities in the medical field, and reduce the need to travel to remote areas for emergency treatment.
