Kalyanpur: Tension erupted at a private hospital in Kanpur's Kalyanpur on Sunday night after a road accident victim died during treatment, with his family alleging medical negligence and protesting at the hospital. The confrontation later turned violent, with stone-pelting leaving seven people injured.

The patient had been admitted to the hospital on Tuesday after sustaining serious injuries in a road accident. According to his family, the hospital collected a Rs 20,000 advance payment for his treatment, but they alleged that he did not receive adequate treatment over the following days.

The family said the patient’s condition deteriorated on Sunday evening, following which the hospital advised them to shift him to another facility. Doctors at the second hospital examined him and declared him dead.

The family then returned to the first hospital with the body and demanded action against the management and staff, alleging negligence in treatment. The confrontation reportedly intensified on the hospital premises, with both sides allegedly engaging in stone-pelting, reports TOI.

Five people from the patient’s side were injured, including a police officer who is a relative of the family. Two hospital staff members also suffered head injuries. All seven injured people were taken to Barasirhi Community Health Centre (CHC) for medical examination.

Police reached the hospital after being alerted about the disturbance and brought the situation under control. Additional personnel were deployed in the area as the family continued its protest for several hours.

The family has submitted a complaint to the police seeking action over the patient’s treatment. The deceased had sustained injuries in a collision between two motorcycles while travelling to Shivli earlier in the week.

Kalyanpur police said the allegations would be examined as part of the investigation and that the patient’s body was being sent for post-mortem.

“Further action will be taken based on the post-mortem report and the facts revealed in the investigation,” the police said.

The allegations of medical negligence have not yet been established, and the circumstances leading to the patient’s death remain under investigation
