Ambikapur: A premature baby is fighting for life after being born in the toilet of Rajmata Shrimati Devendra Kumari Singhdev Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Ambikapur. The newborn was found trapped in a pipe connecting the toilet seat to the sewer and is currently on a ventilator under close medical supervision.

Hospital sources said the mother, a resident of Pratappur in Surajpur district, did not realise she had delivered the baby and returned to her ward to sleep. About half an hour later, she noticed her stomach was empty and informed the nurses.

Hospital staff, along with cleaners, rushed to the toilet and carefully retrieved the newborn. The mother had been admitted to the AMC-2 ward after experiencing labour pains on November 13. She was first taken to Pratappur Community Health Centre before being referred to the Ambikapur Medical College Hospital.

According to news reports, Dr. Ramesh Arya, joint director and medical superintendent of Ambikapur Medical College Hospital, stated that Rambati Bai was seven months pregnant and had been admitted for routine check-ups. He explained that she probably underwent precipitated labour while in the washroom and did not realise she had delivered.

The doctors said it was a premature delivery, with the baby weighing 1.3 kilograms. The infant was immediately rescued and found to be breathing. A video of the rescue circulated online, showing staff breaking the commode to retrieve the baby. Hospital officials clarified that the footage was recorded after the infant had already been rescued, likely during repairs to the toilet.

The hospital staff informed that this was the woman's second pregnancy. Medical personnel explained that in rare cases, sudden pressure or urges during bowel movements can precipitate unexpected deliveries, particularly in advanced labour, reports TOI.

The rescue was carried out by cleaning supervisor Ashish Sahu and his team, including Hari, Rakesh, Vinay, and Rajesh. They dismantled the septic tank carefully over half an hour to safely retrieve the baby, who had remained trapped for about an hour but continued breathing throughout the ordeal. The sanitation workers cleaned the infant and handed him over to the medical team for urgent care.

Speaking to the ETV Bharat, Dr JK Relwani, Assistant Superintendent and Paediatrician, said, "The baby is premature. Sometimes, such deliveries occur due to pressure on a pregnant woman's foetus. The mother is out of danger, while the baby's condition is critical. The baby is on a ventilator and is being monitored by doctors.”
