Rajiv Gandhi General Hospital secures first spot among Tamil Nadu Govt hospitals

Chennai: Securing first place in the list of the state's best-performing government medical college hospitals, Government Rajiv Gandhi General Hospital has scored the highest with 300.6 points this year.
Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital is a major state-owned hospital situated in Chennai, India. Founded in 1664 by the British East India Company, it is the first modern hospital in India. The hospital has more than 52 operation theatres, besides intensive care units and post-operative wards.
The second place has been awarded to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) and the third place to Government Mohan Kumarangalam medical college hospital in Salem. Both hospitals scored 265.8 points and 265.1, respectively.

Last year in December, CMCH ranked third among government medical college hospitals in the State in terms of various performance parameters that were assessed from April to October.
Talking about this, the Dean of CMCH Dr A Nirmala, told TNIE, “The activities of each department are given marks separately, and the total points are given and the ranking is given at the state level based on the points. The CMCH ranked second with 265.8 points in January 2023.
CMCH has secured the second position despite having a staff shortage. The strength of doctors stood at 332 in CMCH as against 977 in RGGGH and 430 in GMKMC, Salem. Similarly, CMCH had a staff nurse strength of 230 while RGGGH has 1,552 and GMKMCH, Salem has 314.
In Tamil Nadu, the Government Medical College Hospitals are ranked monthly based on their performance based on a points system.
A total of 163 children underwent cardiac examination at the CMCH in January of which 31 children were diagnosed with heart-related problems. Out of the 31 kids, 3 children are to be treated on the CMCH campus and the remaining 28 children are likely to be treated in Chennai, said the sources.
The CMCH has many departments including the cardiology department, orthopaedic department, neurology department, toxicology department, and urology department, etc.
Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College is a Tamil Nadu government medical college established in 1986. The Salem government district hospital was built in 1913 by the British government. The campus spanned 13 acres.
