Chennai: Rajiv Gandhi Govt Hospital Doctor assaulted by kin of deceased patient
Chennai: A postgraduate doctor working at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) in Chennai was allegedly assaulted by the attendants of a patient after the latter passed away in the hospital on the night of 11th February 2023.
After the doctors informed the kin of the patient about the death, they became angry and got into an argument with the doctor. They began assaulting the doctor subsequently.

A security officer who tried to intervene in the brawl was also assaulted along with the doctor.
Dr E Theranirajan, Dean of Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, told DTNext, "There seems to have been some misunderstanding between the patient's family and the doctors, it was settled yesterday night itself. The problem is solved between them and the hospital is not taking any action on them."
Meanwhile, the health minister Ma Subramanian also visited the hospital during the same night to admit a road accident victim to the hospital while returning home from work. The minister was present there when the argument was taking place, and he is reported to have intervened and solved the issue.
Expressing concerns over the growing number of assaults against doctors, the government doctors are alleging that the attendants of the patients attack the doctor without being aware of the medical condition of the patient and then blame the doctors when things go wrong. A number of doctors' associations have been demanding action against the growing cases of assault.
Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported about the demands put forth by the Government Rajindra Hospital in Patiala after unknown persons had attacked an ENT Junior resident doctor and a lift attendant within the hospital premises. The hospital employees, under the banner of the Employees’ Welfare Joint Action Committee of Government Medical College and Rajindra Hospital, had warned of boycotting their work if their demands were not met.
