Lucknow: A 3D printing lab will soon be set up at Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS), Lucknow, to produce customised dental, facial, and orthopaedic implants.

The facility, costing approximately Rs 25 lakh, is expected to be ready within three months, said Chief Medical Superintendent Prof. Vikram Singh during a workshop on “3D Planning and Printing in Healthcare” on Friday. "The workshop has been organised so that students can learn how 3D printed implants can be made at our institute," he added.

Dr. Padmanidhi Agarwal, oral and maxillofacial surgeon, highlighted the patient benefits, noting that individuals with facial injuries, jaw deformities, tumours, or missing teeth often need implants that are precisely shaped. 3D printing allows doctors to create an exact model of a patient’s bone or face, improving surgical planning, reducing operation time, and enhancing both functional and aesthetic outcomes.

Speaking to TOI, Prof Shally Mahajan of the dental faculty said the institute currently sends CT scans to companies in Chennai, Pune, and Bengaluru to print 3D models. These models are used to plan surgeries. Once the exact shape of the implant is finalised, the requirement is sent again for printing PEEK implants—a strong, body-friendly plastic used in bone and dental reconstruction. "With our own lab, this process will become faster, cheaper, and accurate," she said.

During the workshop, Dr. John Nesan and his team from CTARS, Chennai, demonstrated how clinical scans can be converted into 3D models, enabling doctors to design patient-specific prostheses (artificial body parts made to fit an individual). They also explained the applications of 3D printing in orthopaedics (bone surgeries), neurosurgery (brain and spine), dentistry, jaw reconstruction, implant planning, orthodontic aligners, and prosthetic rehabilitation.

Around 200 medical and dental practitioners from across Uttar Pradesh attended the workshop, coordinated by Dr. Simith Yadav and Dr. Sweta Mehta, reflecting growing interest in 3D printing technology in healthcare.
