Short circuit in AC triggers fire at MKCG Medical College Hospital in Berhampur

Berhampur: A fire broke out in the Gynaecology and Obstetrics Department of MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur around 3 pm on Tuesday, triggering panic among patients, attendants and hospital staff.
According to the news reports, the fire erupted inside a room of the anaesthesia section attached to the operation theatre on the second floor of the department. The blaze is suspected to have been caused by an electrical short circuit in an air conditioner.

Fire personnel stationed at the hospital premises were alerted soon after the incident and rushed to the spot. The flames were brought under control promptly, preventing the situation from escalating. Fortunately, no patients were present inside the operation theatre when the incident occurred.
No casualty or significant property damage was reported in the incident, said Prof Sudeepa Das, superintendent of the MCH. She added that a short circuit led to the fire, and it was tackled immediately by fire safety officers. However, the fire rattled people in the hospital, reports TNIE.
The incident also brought attention to fire-safety arrangements on the hospital premises. A fire office is located within the MCH campus. However, a purported lapse was noticed at the entrance of the Gynaecology and Obstetrics Department, where a fire extinguisher carrying an expired validity date was reportedly installed.
The cylinder reportedly showed a gas-filling date of August 1, 2025, while its validity had expired on July 31, 2026.
Speaking to TNIE, Fire officer Purnachandra Marandi said the situation was brought under control promptly. Officials avoided the question on the expired fire extinguisher.
