Special 500-bedded COVID ward set up at Salem Government Hospital

Salem: Amidst a threat of rising COVID cases in the country, a special COVID-19 ward with 500 beds was set up at Salem Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital by the district administration. 

Further, an additional 500 beds were also set up at a COVID care centre within the premises of Salem Steel Plant (SSP).

Stating that the number of beds could be increased according to the required needs, Collector S Karmegam informed Times of India, "Thirteen government hospitals, 64 private hospitals, 23 upgraded government primary health centres and special COVID-19 care centres are ready to treat COVID patients in the event of a spike in cases in the district." 

The COVID Care Centre at Salem Steel Plant (SSP) was established using the amount contributed by the public, which is worth Rs 4 crore.  

According to the data issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the total number of active COVID cases in the state is 3048 till 16th April 2023. Meanwhile, the total number of active cases in the county by 15th April 2023 was reported to be 57542. 

Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that the Serum Institute of India (SII) CEO Adar Poonawalla said it had restarted manufacturing of the COVID-19 vaccine Covishield amid rising numbers of cases of the virus infection. He said the company already has six million booster doses of the Covovax vaccine available and adults must take the booster shot. Reacting to reports of COVID-19 vaccines shortage, he said manufacturers are ready, but there has been no demand. Covovax booster is now on the CoWin app and Covovax is manufactured through technology transfer from Novavax.
