Tamil Nadu: Health Minister inaugurates Fall Prevention Programme at MGM healthcare

Chennai: The Health Minister Thiru Ma Subramanian has recently launched an awareness programme on the Fall Prevention programme for the elderly at MGM Healthcare.

The falls prevention programme aimed to improve quality of life, physical function and falls efficacy in older people receiving home help services. Falls and fall-related injuries in older adults are associated with great burdens, both for the individuals, the health care system and the society. Hence the MGM will provide doorstep services to the elders as well as provide knowledge on the awareness about the fall.

Falls can cause broken bones, like wrist, arm, ankle, and hip fractures. Falls can cause head injuries as well. Though falls can be unpredictable but taking measures to ensure that one can prevent falling by using handrails, grab bars, non-slip mats and improving the house floors. The MGM doctors will provide training to the elders to prevent them from fall-related injuries.

The Director of the hospital Dr Prashanth Rajagopalan, along with Dr Govindaraj AB, Director, and Senior Consultant of Orthopaedics were present.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Govindaraj said, "Most people consider falls as natural and part of Life. Falls are not natural, can be devastating and yet is preventable. We at MGM Healthcare curated this programme aimed at seniors and caregivers to raise awareness of these facts. Brittle bone disease and Vitamin D deficiency are rampant in our society, which can add to the problem of falls and fractures. Our Strong bones program will identify those at risk and help them to overcome their deficiency."

Dr Rajagopalan told IMT, "According to the World Health Organization (WHO) global report on falls prevention, elderly fall about 28 per cent–35 per cent in each year and this proportion increases as age and frailty level increase. The programme will provide extensive support to senior citizens by identifying their health conditions and providing appropriate remedies. MGM Healthcare takes pride in setting up a dedicated programme for the elderly."
