Tamil Nadu launches non-profit foundation to boost Infrastructure at Govt Hospitals
Tamil Nadu: The Tamil Nadu government has launched Nalam Tamil Nadu, a non-profit foundation aimed at mobilising donations from corporates, charitable organisations, medical college alumni, and individual donors to strengthen infrastructure and healthcare services in government hospitals.
The initiative seeks to bridge infrastructure gaps by enabling donors to directly support specific hospitals and healthcare projects across the state.
The foundation, inaugurated by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Tuesday, will serve as a transparent platform through which contributors can fund the development of government healthcare facilities. During the launch event, the Chief Minister also handed over appointment orders to 751 doctors and 1,393 health inspectors and inaugurated new hospital buildings and medical equipment developed at a cost of ₹139.47 crore.
The initiative is expected to support Tamil Nadu's extensive public healthcare network, comprising 36 government medical college hospitals, 37 district headquarters hospitals, 286 other government hospitals, and 2,336 primary health centres. Together, these institutions cater to more than 8 lakh outpatients and nearly 75,000 inpatients every day.

According to The Times of India, the state government said the foundation aims to improve infrastructure and expand access to essential and advanced healthcare services in government hospitals. Health officials noted that while the state's hospitals already provide quality care, many facilities still require improvements such as clean sanitation, residential quarters for healthcare workers, dialysis machines, linear accelerators, and other advanced medical equipment. Donors will be able to choose the hospitals or projects they wish to support through a transparent donation process.
The report further stated that soon after the foundation was launched, several organisations announced contributions towards government hospitals, while an individual donor who recently delivered a baby at a government hospital also made a donation, reflecting the initiative's broader appeal to both institutions and the public.
