Tamil Nadu: Upgradation of Government Headquarters Hospital to be completed by December

Erode: While inspecting the eight-storey Thanthai Periyar Government Headquarters Hospital, Mr. E.V. Velu, Minister for Public Works, Highways and Minor Ports, said that the upgradation of the hospital will take three more months and will be completed by the end of this year.

The upgradation of the hospital cost around Rs 64 crore, built at a large space of 2,32,602 sq ft of land. The works began in October 2020 and would be completed by December 2022.

The minister was accompanied by Minister for Housing and Urban Development S. Muthusamy and Collector H. Krishnanunni. Minister Velu told The Hindu, "Most of the works were completed, and the rest would be finished as per schedule. All the works will be completed by the end of December and will be opened for the public."

The hospital, which started functioning in 1956, caters to the needs of people in the district and from nearby districts. The hospital, with over 750 beds, also treated COVID-19 patients during the first and second waves in 2020 and 2021. The conversion of the hospital into a government medical college and hospital with better amenities was demanded by the populace. 

The new block will house five operation theatres, classrooms for house surgeons, and training centres. Each floor will have a construction area of 27,500 sq ft, while the ground floor is exclusive for parking. The first floor will house emergency care, and ICU and the ambulances can reach the ground floor. Also, the seventh floor will be allotted exclusively for patients undergoing treatment under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme.

Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that the 120-year-old Masina Hospital would upgrade the patient facility for Rs 22 crores which is expected to be completed in the next two months to provide better patient facilities.
