Bhopal: In a shocking incident, charred bodies of two newborns were discovered behind the mortuary of Bhopal’s Hamidia Hospital, prompting a full-scale forensic and police investigation.

The disturbing incident surfaced when waste dumped in an open plot adjacent to the mortuary near a fountain where hospital workers and visitors routinely discard garbage was found engulfed in flames during the early hours of the day. Hospital staff immediately took action and doused the fire.

According to the news reports, it wasn’t until the morning that passersby noticed what appeared to be the remains of newborns in the charred debris. Police were alerted immediately, and officers retrieved the bodies around 1 pm.

On Thursday, a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team inspected the scene and collected samples of burnt plastic, charred clothing, and ashes for detailed analysis. Officials have not ruled out the possibility that inflammable materials were used to ignite the fire.

Speaking to the Free Press Journal, Police informed that CCTV footage from the mortuary zone is unclear and of poor quality, making it difficult to identify those who dumped the newborns’ bodies into the water tank, which is currently being used as a garbage dump. Koh-e-Fiza police station in-charge KG Shukla said the hospital administration has been asked to provide DVRs of other CCTV cameras on the premises.

Investigators believe the culprits might have set the fire intentionally to destroy the bodies and eliminate evidence. The flames reportedly grew intense, prompting someone to alert the fire department. After the fire was brought under control, firefighters discovered the infants’ bodies wrapped in plastic.

A bedsheet was also found in the garbage, leading police to suspect the babies were wrapped in it before being discarded, reports
TOI.

Given the location of the tank and restricted access to the area, investigators strongly suspect the involvement of someone from within the hospital.

A five-member panel of doctors conducted the autopsies on Thursday. Preliminary findings revealed that one infant was burned almost 90 percent, while the other was partially charred. DNA samples have also been requested to investigate potential links to recent deliveries or abandoned infants in the area.

Both remains have been preserved in the mortuary, and a detailed investigation is underway.
