The matter came to light after the husband of the deceased registered a complaint against the hospital manager Ranjit Nishad.

According to the complaint, a 30-year-old pregnant woman named Sonavat Devi, a resident of the Jainpur area, died at Satyam hospital in the Gulriha area of Gorakhpur on Tuesday.

The illegal hospital was located in a double-storey building and had around 10 beds, locals claimed.

During a press conference on Saturday, SSP Gaurav Grover said, ''Satyam hospital was running illegally from last many years by the manager of the hospital Nishad who was arrested today.'' ''Nishad without any legal degree was giving medical consultation and treatment to the patients on the prescription pad with names of legal doctors and was playing with the lives of patients,'' he said, adding, ''Due to the negligence of the hospital manager Ranjit Nishad, a pregnant woman Sonvati Devi died on Tuesday.

Police also found that Nishad was previously operating the same hospital under two different names. The hospital was closed by the health department for malpractices both the time but the accused still managed to reopen it under a different name, the SSP said.

The role of some employees of the health department has also come to light. Police have written a letter to the chief medical officer (CMO) to take legal and departmental action against them, he said.

SSP said a gangster act will also be added against the accused and an appeal will be made to the district magistrate for attaching his property.

The senior police official has also written a letter to CMO to inform people about the registered hospitals, diagnostic centres, pathology centres etc through media so that illegal institutes could be identified and action could be taken against them.
