Urinary Bladder cut during emergency operation for labour: Nursing Home directed to pay Rs 4 lakh compensation
Balurghat: Following an investigation, the South Dinajpur District Health Department, West Bengal has directed a Balurghat-based Nursing Home authorities to pay Rs 4 lakh compensation to the family of a pregnant woman, whose urinary bladder was wrongly cut during an emergency operation for her delivery.
Such a direction was given by the District Health authorities after the husband of the patient lodged a complaint and demanded a compensation for the alleged wrong operation. Thereafter, the Health Department set up a special team for investigating the matter and found the nursing home to be guilty of medical negligence, reports Millenium Post.
The matter goes back to February, earlier this year, when the pregnant woman was taken to the nursing home for labour pain. After examining the patient, a female gynecologist at the nursing home expressed the need for an emergency operation.
Consequently, the operation was conducted by the doctor and Rs 50,000 was charged for the same. However, it has been alleged that soon after the operation, the patient's condition worsened and she was referred to Malda for treatment. As the condition kept deteriorating, ultimately the patient was referred to Kolkata.
Due to the fact that the family of the patient was unable to bear the cost of treatment in Kolkata, the patient was taken back to Balurghat and they contacted the District Magistrate Ayesha Rani A for the treatment of the patient. Finally the DM intervened and referred the patient to R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
As per the latest media report by Millenium Post, during her treatment in Kolkata, experts examined the patient and noted that the urinary bladder of the patient had been wrongly operated, which resulted in her post surgery illness. After the doctors in Kolkata conducted a microsurgery, the patient started getting better and she started responding positively.
Afterward, the husband of the patient approached the District Health Department Balurghat and lodged a complaint against the nursing home authorities and demanded a compensation. Following this, an investigating team had been formed and it discovered that the allegations made by the woman's family were right. Consequently, the Nursing home was directed to pay Rs 4 lakh as compensation for the alleged medical negligence while operating on the patient.
