44-year-old patient commits suicide at Burdwan Hospital, wife alleges medical negligence
Burdwan: In a shocking incident, a 44-year-old patient admitted to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital (BMCH) committed suicide by hanging from a tree near the morgue of the BMCH hospital with a towel.
The deceased has been identified as 44-year-old Nayan Bag, who was suffering from recurring pain in the gallbladder. He was a resident of Goghat, Hooghly.
Nearly a year and 6 months ago, Nayan was first diagnosed with gallbladder stone and was being operated on since this year when he again started to feel the pain in his gallbladder. His wife Mithu Bag took him to the Kotulpur block hospital in Bankura on Tuesday morning and the doctors there referred him to the BMC hospital.

The doctors at the BMC hospital decided to operate on him again. The operation date was scheduled for Wednesday and he was shifted to the ER ward before getting into the operation theatre. As per Mithu's statement, Nayan started to feel uncontrollable pain at 2 am but no doctors were present at the hospital at that time.
Unable to bear the pain, Nayan decided to commit suicide. While his wife was away to call the doctors, he escaped from the ward and went downstairs. The hospital authorities then formed a search party and found Nayan hanging from the tree at 3 am.

Blaming the hospital, Mithu said that his husband would have been saved if there was a doctor at that time. Later, Mithu went to the police station and registered a complaint against the doctors of the hospital for medical negligence against her husband Nayan.
Dr Tapas Ghosh, medical superintendent, BMCH told The Statesman, "We've constituted a three-member inquiry committee to conduct a probe into the charges."
