Bengaluru: A viral post on social media platform X questioning the quality of food served in hospitals has ignited a broader discussion on nutritional standards in healthcare facilities, with many users sharing similar experiences from across the country.

The discussion began after a post from a user identified as Pooja recounted the experience of a woman who was staying at a hospital in Bengaluru while caring for her mother. The post drew significant attention online, prompting discussions about the quality and nutritional value of meals provided in hospitals.

According to the post, while describing a daughter’s experience, the online user stated that the patient’s bones had become extremely weak, and she was admitted in the hope that proper treatment and nutrition would help her recover. The post stated, “But what shocked the daughter the most was not the illness; it was the food. For breakfast, her mother was served plain white bread with sugar-loaded jam. Hoping to find something healthier, she went to the hospital canteen. Instead, she found counters packed with samosas, fried paneer rolls, veg burgers, cheese sandwiches, waffles, bagels, sweets, and all kinds of deep-fried snacks.”

“For a moment, it felt less like a hospital and more like a fast-food court. The irony could not be more striking. A place dedicated to healing and recovery seemed to offer very little that actually promotes health. If hospitals are where people go to get better, should they not also be setting an example when it comes to nutrition? What do you think? Have you ever experienced something similar in a hospital?” it added.

As the post gained traction, several social media users joined the debate, sharing their own experiences regarding food served in hospitals. The debate has since expanded into a broader conversation about hospital nutrition standards and their role in patient care.

“This is unacceptable. Hospitals should serve nutrient-dense food to aid recovery, especially for patients with weak bones, not sugary bread and fried snacks. Thanks for highlighting this, Pooja jee. Needs urgent change among hospital canteen,” one stated. The person making the original post stated, “Healthy food should be available in hospitals where people go for treatment. Because sick people go to hospitals for treatment and not to party. If someone wants to eat such food, then there are thousands of restaurants to eat such food.”
