PMJAY Beneficiaries Death Row: Khyati Hospital among 7 suspended from Ayushman Bharat
Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad-based Khyati Hospital, which was previously debarred from the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) after two beneficiaries died following a botched angioplasty, has now been suspended from the list of PMJAY-authorized healthcare providers by the state government. Along with Khyati Hospital, six other hospitals have also been suspended.
Additionally, four specialist doctors have been suspended in connection with the incident.
PMJAY, which is the world's largest health assurance scheme will no longer be beneficial to these hospitals which include Shri Jivan Jyot Arogya Hospital in Gir Somnath, Naritva Hospital in Ahmedabad, Shiv Hospital and Khyati Multispecialty Hospital from Ahmedabad, Nihit Babycare Children Hospital in Rajkot and Sunshine Global Hospital in Surat and Vadodara.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that Ahmedabad's Khyati Hospital, embroiled in controversy was issued a show cause notice by Dr Prakash Mehta, Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) at Sola Civil Hospital for operating without mandatory registration under The Clinical Establishments (Registration and Regulation) Act, 2010.
This comes after two patients, who attended a free medical camp organized by Khyati Hospital under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) passed away due to postoperative complications following angioplasty procedures. The angioplasty was performed on 12 of the 19 patients and two of them died while 5 others were kept on ventilation.
Meanwhile, the state government has also suspended four specialist doctors. Among them are a paediatrician from Nihit Hospital, a radiation oncologist, a surgical oncologist from Sunshine Hospital and a cardiologist from Khyati Hospital, as per Ahmedabad Mirror news report.
It is to be noted that the suspended cardiologist from Khyati Hospital was the one who performed angioplasty on two patients which led to their death. Medical Dialogues had reported that the cardiologist was arrested within hours after a case was registered by the police.
The arrested doctor is one of five persons accused in three FIRs filed in the case where the owners and doctor of Khyati Multispeciality Hospital were booked for culpable homicide, attempted culpable homicide, forgery, cheating, and criminal conspiracy for allegedly performing unnecessary angioplasty surgeries on two patients who later died due to alleged negligence in post-operative care.
