Submit list of schizophrenia care centres: HC to Delhi Govt, AIIMS
New Delhi: The Delhi High Court recently asked the Delhi Government and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to submit details about the facilities available in and around the national capital which provides care and treatment to patients with schizophrenia.
This comes while Virtually hearing a petition filed by the mother of a schizophrenia patient seeking various reliefs and directions to the State Government and the authority of AIIMS in view of the mental condition of her son, who is 32 years of age.
In an earlier hearing on the case on 26th March, the court had directed AIIMS to file a report pertaining to the OPD card of the petitioner's son and also the events which transpired on the admission of the Petitioner's son to AIIMS.
Responding to the court order, AIIMS in its report submitted that a Senior Resident in Psychiatry at AIIMS had examined the Petitioner's son and had diagnosed him with `Schizophrenia'.
According to the AIIMS report, the petitioner's son was to be admitted to the Psychiatry Ward of AIIMS, after being tested for COVID-19, as per protocols. However, during that period, he escaped from the hospital premises.
While listing the matter for further hearing on 27th April, the court ruled,
"Considering the nature of the matter and the medical condition of the Petitioner's son, it is deemed appropriate to direct the ld. Counsel for the Petitioner and the other counsels appearing for the Respondents to place on record a list of facilities in and around Delhi, which provide care and treatment to patients of Schizophrenia."
In the meantime, the Court has given the Petitioner the liberty to contact the SHO of the concerned area, if there was any threat to her and her husband in any manner due to the alleged violent and aggressive nature of her son.
Court has also directed the concerned SHO to stay in touch with the petitioner and to immediately attend to her concerns. However, the SHO has been asked to not make regular visits to the Petitioner's house until and unless the Petitioner calls for assistance/help, reports PTI.
