Madurai: A man who was arrested and remanded in judicial custody for possessing banned tobacco products was granted bail on the condition of payment of Rs 50,000 to the Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital.
The bail order with the given condition was given by Justice A. D. Jagadish Chandira in the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court. Justice Chandira asked him to pay the required amount to the government hospital.
The accused has been identified as a resident of Tirunelveli district, who was arrested by the Veeravanallur police in Tirunelveli and remanded in judicial custody on November 28.
The accused along with others were caught with banned tobacco products which were worth Rs 1.49 lakhs amounting to 69.62 kg of such products. The court further directed him to not flee anywhere during the investigation or trial. Further, the petitioner was directed to report before the police station every day until further orders, reports the Times of India.
The Madras High court had passed a similar order while granting bail to a man who was arrested for possession of banned tobacco products earlier this month. The petitioner was asked to pay Rs 2 lakh to the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) in the Madurai district. He was arrested by the Samayanallur police in Madurai district on November 19 after he was found to be in possession of banned tobacco products worth 3.9 lakh, as per an earlier media report in the Times of India. The counsel of the petitioner had submitted that the petitioner was willing to deposit a sum of 2 lakh to any one of the welfare schemes. Taking into account the submissions, Justice A D Jagadish Chandira had granted bail to the petitioner on certain conditions.
